Kochi: A 34-year-old man was arrested from Gujarat by Thadiyittaparambu police in an online fraud case. The arrested person was identified as Reeten Keerthbhai Hakkani of Surat, Gujarat.
According to police, he was arrested for defrauding Rs 7.80 lakh from a Kizhakkambalam resident under the guise of a fake trading app. The victim met him through social media, where he was promised substantial profits if he invested money in online trading. The financial transactions were conducted through an app sent by the accused. Between Feb 17 and March 7, money was deposited into various accounts, said the police.
When the victim attempted to withdraw the profit shown in the app's wallet, the accused demanded a commission, revealing the fraud. A complaint was promptly filed at Thadiyittaparambu police station and a case was registered. Under the supervision of district police chief Vaibhav Saxena, a special team was formed to investigate, which revealed that the accused was from Surat. The investigation team stayed undercover in Surat for a week.
Police said that the suspect resided in an apartment complex inhabited by affluent individuals. When an attempt was made to nab him, he tried to escape, but after a long pursuit, he was taken into custody and brought back to Ernakulam on Saturday. It was discovered that the Rs 7.80 lakh was transferred to an account in the accused's name at the Bank of India's branch in Surat. The investigation team included ASP Shakti Singh Arya, inspector PJ Kuriakose, SI AH Ajimon, senior CPO KK Shibu, CPOs Mithun Mohan, K Vinod and the cyber cell team.
School bus meets with accident: A school bus, carrying students returning from a trip related to a vacation event, met with an accident at Varapuzha on Saturday night. The accident occurred at SNDP junction and some of the students sustained minor injuries, said police. Police said that the bus went out of control, hit an electric post and overturned.
