JAIPUR: A 34-year-old man was arrested, Friday, for allegedly attacking his wife with a knife during a violent altercation in the city.
DCP (south) Digant Anand said the accused, identified as Dhanraj Meena, a native of Nenwa in Bundi district, was booked for attempted murder.
On April 8, Meena allegedly assaulted his wife, Chanda Devi, during a heated argument at their rented accommodation in Shriram Vihar, under Muhana police station limits.
"He stabbed her multiple times in the hand and abdomen, and again in the back after she collapsed. He then fled the scene," Anand told TOI.
Neighbours, alerted by the woman's scream, rushed her to SMS Hospital, where she remains in critical condition. Police recorded her statement once her condition stabilised and registered a case under charges of attempted murder. Meena was arrested, Friday, while attempting to flee to his village.
According to police, Meena is addicted to alcohol and frequently quarrelled with his wife after drinking.
The victim, originally from Kota, married Meena for the second time about a year ago. She currently works at a garment export factory nearby.
"In her statement, the woman said that around 10:30 am on April 8, Meena threatened to leave her. She didn't take his threats seriously, assuming it was one of his usual drunken episodes. But the argument quickly escalated into physical violence," Anand said.
Police added Meena does not have permanent employment and survives by doing odd jobs. "We are also examining his past criminal record," the officer said.
