Hubballi: Prof Manish Joshi, secretary, University Grants Commission (UGC), Govt of India, inaugurated the Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR) — one of the seven STAR (Science and Technology Advanced Research) Labs at KLE Technological University, Hubballi, on Saturday.
Addressing the event, Prof Joshi said that artificial intelligence (AI) should be used carefully. "Use it with wisdom and values," he said. He emphasised innovation and the responsible use of AI technologies, highlighting emerging frontiers of AI, including sensory learning models (SLMs) and the digitisation of sensory inputs like smell, which push the boundaries of AI applications.
Chairman of KLE Society, Belagavi, Dr Prabhakar Kore, stated that the lab was set up at a cost of Rs 24 crore. He mentioned that the lab will help students create innovative projects, emphasising that practical teaching is more important than bookish knowledge.
Pro-chancellor Ashok Shettar remarked that AI is a transformative force initiating industries and societies. "Our CAIR Lab will act as a hub for interdisciplinary research, innovation, and real-world impact," he said, referencing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks at the recent AI Summit in France, which underscored India's commitment to becoming a global leader in responsible and inclusive AI development.
