Good Friday commerorated across Mizoram
Aizawl: Christians commemorated Good Friday, marking the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ to save the world from sin, with deep reverence and devotional spirit across the state.
The observances began on Maundy Thursday with special holy masses conducted in local churches of various denominations, followed by night-long vigils remembering Christ's arrest by Roman soldiers from the garden of Gethsemane during his prayers.
Friday's events featured dedicated prayer services and worship focusing on Christ's suffering and crucifixion. Catholic congregants conducted large cross processions through the streets of Aizawl city and various towns and villages across the state.
Local churches belonging to Presbyterian, Baptist, United Pentecostal and other denominations organised special programmes where church choirs performed hymns depicting Christ's suffering and death.
Whilst some village churches arranged community feasts, the majority observed the occasion through solemn religious services in their respective places of worship.
Unlike Christmas, which occurs on Dec 25 annually, Good Friday's date aligns with the Jewish ‘Passover' festival on 14th Nisan, falling between March 20 and April 25, on the Friday nearest to the full moon. Easter follows on the subsequent Sunday after Good Friday, with Pentecost Day occurring 50 days after Easter.
