Gauhati HC issues notice over ‘detention’ of Congress worker
Guwahati: Gauhati High Court issued notices to the state govt, the principal secretary of the home department, and the DGP to respond to a petition regarding the alleged illegal detention of a Congress worker by police.
Lawyer and Congress spokesperson Reetam Singh filed the writ petition seeking to set aside and quash the impugned FIR registered against him on April 12, declaring his detention illegal and without following due procedure of law.
It is alleged that Singh was falsely implicated and arrested in several frivolous cases, with different FIRs lodged in different police stations one after another, without following due procedure of law and flouting the guidelines of the Supreme Court and high courts.
After hearing the petition on Wednesday, Justices Kalyan Rai Surana and Malasri Nandi issued notices to the state govt, the principal secretary (home dept), and the DGP, directing them to file an affidavit on the next date of hearing on May 2, as the petition alleges illegal detention.
On the other hand, a delegation of senior Congress leaders, led by the party's national spokesperson Charan Singh Sapra, visited Singh in Morigaon jail on Thursday. Singh was earlier arrested and sent to jail in Lakhimpur for a tweet allegedly against three BJP leaders. After being granted bail in that case, he was again arrested in a case registered in Morigaon.
The team also conveyed that the matter will be urgently escalated to senior leadership within the AICC, and appropriate legal redressal mechanisms are being pursued.
Sapra said, "No Congress worker will ever be abandoned or silenced for standing up against injustice. The morale of our cadre will not be allowed to waver. If BJP believes it can intimidate the Congress family through vendetta politics, they are gravely mistaken."
