Silchar: Despite the announceent of a polytechnic institute in Dima Hasao district thirteen years ago and the completion of construction several years back, its operations are yet to commence. This has incited discontent among the local populace.
In the fiscal year of 2011-12, Assam govt resolved to establish at least 17 polytechnic institutes across various districts. As part of this initiative, construction commenced for the Polytechnic Institute at Choto Wapu in Dima Hasao, with an allocation of Rs 6.5 crore. Although the construction of this polytechnic was completed, it remains uninaugurated even after 13 years.
Meanwhile, the Dimasas Students' Union has raised concerns regarding the substandard quality of the construction. It is noteworthy that the institute was constructed by a Guwahati-based construction firm under the supervision of the Public Works Department.
A delegation from the DSU, led by its general secretary Promith Sengyung, visited the Polytechnic Institute on Friday. "Even after 13 years, this polytechnic institute remains unopened. Despite our repeated submissions of memorandums to state govt, neither state govt nor the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council has taken any action."
Moreover, Sengyung expressed concerns, adding, "The poor quality of work at this polytechnic warrants an inquiry into the agency and officials responsible for overseeing this project."
On behalf of the Dimasas Students' Union, a two-week ultimatum has been issued to the state govt and the authorities of the NCHAC to reach a decision regarding this polytechnic institute. Should the govt neglect to act thereafter, the union has threatened to spearhead a vigorous democratic movement.
