Panaji:Goa police on Saturday registered an FIR against the owner of an apartment for allegedly illegally providing accommodation to the Israeli national Yaniv Benaim, alias Atala, an alleged drug dealer. Goa police said Atala told them he was unemployed.
North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal said that under Section 14(C) of the Foreigners Act, 1946, a case was registered at the Anjuna police station based on a state complaint lodged by PSI Dindayal Redkar of the anti-narcotics cell (ANC) police station.
“As per the complaint, a 36-year-old resident of Siolim, Param Ulhas Warty, is the owner of an apartment styled as Casa Juliana located at Siolim,?Kaushal said.
“It has come to light that Warty illegally accommodated Atala in the said rented apartment for the past four months.?br/>
Kaushal said that the accommodation was provided without furnishing the mandatory online C Form to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office, Panaji, which is a violation of the provisions of the Foreigners Act.
Anjuna police on Friday arrested Atala for allegedly staying in Goa without valid documents and remanded him in police custody on Saturday. Based on the complaint by the ANC, Anjuna police registered an FIR against Atala.
“The accused person was found staying in Goa/India without valid travel documents, thereby contravening the provisions of the Foreigners Order, 1948, and Foreigners Act. In this connection, an FIR was registered at the Anjuna police station,?the FIR said.
The ANC arrested Atala in connection with an alleged narcotics case. The police approached the CBI for details of the passport on which he was extradited from Peru in 2011. The ANC found that Uttarakhand police and the CBI have different passport numbers for Atala.
The ANC is also verifying how Atala was issued an Aadhaar card without valid documents. During the investigation, Atala told the ANC that he was unemployed. Police said Atala did not cooperate with the investigation. Police said that they are also inquiring about his three passports.
Atala, who has been staying in Goa since 2006, was arrested in 2010 by Goa police in an alleged police-politician-drug mafia nexus case and was extradited from Peru in 2011.
