Panaji: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday directed departments concerned to adhere to the strict timelines for the establishment of the new Goa Veterinary College, which will start operations from this academic year.The formal name of the institution is Goa College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences.
Sawant chaired a review meeting at Mantralaya to expedite the establishment of the new college.
“I directed officials to adhere to strict timelines and ensure timely coordination with Govt of India. The college will commence operations this academic year without fail,” Sawant said. “We have finalised plans for land transfer, infrastructure upgrades, staff recruitment, labs, and livestock farms.”
State govt is awaiting the green signal from the Veterinary Council of India (VCI). The principal for the college was appointed, and the infrastructure work is under way to heed VCI standards. Govt has started purchasing all the equipment and tools required for the facilities.
Until now, Goa has been sending 11 students to veterinary colleges in Maharashtra every year. The state has a reservation for 11 seats altogether at three institutes — Mumbai Veterinary College, Mumbai; College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Parbhani; and Krantisinh Nana Patil College of Veterinary Science, Shirwal, Satara.
TOI reported last year that Antoine D, a retired professor from Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research, Puducherry, was appointed as the first dean of the Goa Veterinary College.
