5 of family, including 3 kids, killed after car plunges into Alaknanda
Dehradun: Five people, including three children -- 12, 15, and 17 -- of a family from Faridabad, who were on their way to a wedding, were killed and a 37-year-old woman was rescued after their car plunged about 150m below into the Alaknanda river near Devprayag in Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand on Saturday morning.
The lone survivor, Anita Devi, somehow managed to force her way out of one of the windows of the submerged vehicle and sat on a tiny corner of its roof for about an hour till help arrived. The rest were trapped inside the locked vehicle as the water gushed in, and they couldn't survive.
Police said the rescue team found that the doors were locked and initial probe suggests the driver possibly dozed off and lost control of the car after it hit a parapet wall on the opposite side of the two-lane mountainous road.
Devprayag SHO, Mahipal Rawat, said the incident took place around 6:45 am. The SHO added: "A woman was found sitting on the car's roof. She was traumatised, could hardly speak and suffered bruises on her limbs. The rescue team couldn't open the doors. After a while, a crane was used to lift the car from the river."
Those dead were identified as Sunil Gosain (who was driving the car), 37; his wife, Meenu, 35; their two sons, Sujal, 12; and Nukku, 15. The fifth victim was Aditya Negi, 17, the son of Anita Devi, the lone survivor and Gosain's sister-in-law. Anita is a resident of Roorkee while Gosain and his family were from Faridabad, Haryana.
The bodies were sent to a hospital in nearby Srinagar for postmortem. The injured woman is also undergoing treatment there. Gosain, who worked at a private firm in Faridabad, bought the car a fortnight ago and was waiting for its registration number.
"Anita told the cops that they were going to a relative's wedding in Gauchar. Gosain left with his family from Faridabad around 8pm on Friday, and reached her Roorkee home late at night to pick her up. They resumed their journey early on Saturday... Her daughter and husband, who is in the Army, didn't join the trip," SHO Rawat said.
