No data on unemployment or literacy since 2011, govt admits in assembly
Bhopal: The govt has admitted in the state assembly that it has no updated data on the state's literacy rate or the number of unemployed youth. Responding to separate queries, the govt stated that it relies on the 2011 census for literacy figures and does not track registered unemployed individuals through its employment portal.
On March 13, the govt acknowledged that it could not provide details on literacy improvements since 2011, while a reply on unemployment confirmed that the MP Employment Portal (MP Rojgar) only maintains records of job seekers, not actual unemployment figures. The disclosures have raised concerns over the state's ability to assess and address key socio-economic issues.
BJP MLA Abhilash Pandey has asked the school education minister what the current literacy rate in MP is and what was the literacy rate in the year 2011? How much percentage increase has taken place in the literacy rate since the year 2011? What is the department's action plan to make the state 100% literate and by when will the state become a 100% literate state? Give the time-frame.
In a written reply to the question, school education minister Uday Pratap Singh stated the figures of literacy rate in the 2011 census have been released by the govt of India. As the census has not been conducted by the govt of India after the year 2011, it is not possible to tell the current literacy rate.
According to the census of the year 2011, the literacy rate of the state is 69.3 percent. As the census has not been conducted by the govt of India after the year 2011, it is not possible to tell the percentage of increase in the literacy rate.
As per the provisions of National Education Policy, 2020, the central govt is currently running "ULLAS - Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram" to impart basic literacy knowledge along with important life skills like financial literacy, digital literacy, legal literacy to illiterates above the age of 15 years. As per National Education Policy 2020, the entire country is to be made literate by the year 2030, the reply stated.
On March 11, Congress MLA Pratap Grewal asked in the assembly what is the number of unemployed registered in the state's employment office as of January 2025? What was this number in the same month in the year 2015, 2018, 2021, 2024 and what percentage decrease or increase occurred in 2025 as compared to 2015.
Skill development employment minister of state (independent charge) Gautam Tetwal, in his reply, said MP Employment Portal (MP Rojgar) does not maintain the information of registered unemployed, but the information of aspiring youth is maintained. The reply was part of a question on unemployment.
The figures given with the reply stated the number of job fairs in Madhya Pradesh is declining over the years and so is the number of job offer letters to youths. The govt also clarified in its reply that there is no scheme to provide unemployment allowance to the educated unemployed of the state.
The number of job fairs in the state was reduced from 861 in 2021-22 to 563 in 2023-24. The offer letter given to youth in the job fair was 121178 in 2021-22, which came down to 52846 in 2023-24, the reply stated.
The youth get employment opportunities in the private sector through job fairs organised by the govt. As per MP Rojgar portal 29,25,353 youths were registered as on Thursday. It is not an exact figure of unemployed youths in MP, but is considered a basis to estimate unemployment in the state.
