Jaaved Jaaferi calls nepotism debate 'unnecessary': 'Even if Amitabh Bachchan launched his son Abhishek Bachchan...'

Veteran actor and comedian Jaaved Jaaferi recently addressed the much-debated issue of nepotism in Bollywood. He dismissed the excessive debate around nepotism stating that while industry insiders may support their family members, ultimate success depends on the audience’s acceptance.
“Yeah, that’s the word, unnecessary, and I don’t even think it applies too much. Like what Bachchan Sahab said—see, even if he did launch his son, it’s his money, and he’s backing what he believes in. It’s up to the audience to accept him or reject him. If they reject it, who would be the loser? Mr. Bachchan and his son. So where’s the nepotism? I’m the one taking the risk, I’m the one putting in money, I’m the one putting in effort. At the end of the day, the audience is the boss. In one moment, they can say, ‘Bakwaas hai,’ and they can do that,” Jaaved told Bollywood Bubble.
Further elaborating on his views, Jaaved pointed out that nepotism in Bollywood is often exaggerated. He emphasized that those investing in films are making personal decisions about whom to support, and ultimately, the audience holds the power to determine an actor’s success. He noted that some of the industry's biggest names, including Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, had to carve their own paths despite initial struggles. He referenced Salman’s early rejection in Biwi Ho Toh Aisi before his breakthrough in Maine Pyar Kiya, underscoring that success isn't solely dictated by one's lineage.

Discussing the industry's history, Jaaved highlighted that several iconic actors, including Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, and Sunny Deol, had to establish themselves through their talent and hard work. He also cited examples of self-made stars like Akshay Kumar, reinforcing the idea that no matter their background, actors must consistently prove their abilities to sustain their careers.
Talking about Abhishek Bachchan’s journey, he added, “Bachchan Sahab’s son, let’s say, he had so many films after which he was accepted as an actor. He didn’t work box-office wise, but he was a good actor, and he has improved his craft. So I just feel you have to prove yourself at the end of the day. This nepotism business doesn’t count all the time. You’re not playing with public money, we’re playing with our own money—whoever’s putting in the money.”

On the work front, Jaaved Jaaferi has continued to entertain audiences with his diverse performances. He was recently seen in films like Looop Lapeta and Jaadugar, showcasing his versatility and strong screen presence.
