ALLAHABAD: Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her daughter Priyanka Gandhi laid the foundation for installation of state-of-the-art radiation machine for treatment of cancer patients and inaugurated the newly renovated high-tech neonatal intensive care unit at Kamla Nehru Memorial Hospital on Tuesday.
She also chaired a meeting of the members of Kamla Nehru Memorial Trust, entrusted with the task of managing the hospital.

On the second day of her visit to the city, Sonia and Priyanka reached the hospital early in the morning. She first inaugurated a newly built ramp built for the for physically challenged people and senior citizens. Thereafter, the two inaugurated a new ward of neuroscience, trauma and orthopaedics. The facility has 16 general beds and five intensive care units. Priyanka asked patients about their health.
The state-of-the-art NICU comprises 23 phototherapy unit, resustication unit with ventilator support facility.
Chief executive officer of Kamla Nehru Memorial Hospital Madhu Chandra said that the state-of-the-art radiation machine for treatment of cancer patients is second such facility in India and will be ready in six months.
Later Sonia and Priyanka participated in a programme of School of Health Science which impart courses in nursing. The nursing school students hosted a cultural programme comprising skit, patriotic songs and dances. Sonia Gandhi also awarded winners of an essay contest on 'women empowerment and Indira' in which 143 participants from various nursing schools participated. They were given cash prize by the Congress president.
