Apple plans to make significant changes to iPadOS 19 that will bring the tablet operating system closer to the macOS experience, according to a new report. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman revealed in his Power On newsletter that the upcoming iPadOS update will focus heavily on productivity features, improved multitasking capabilities, and enhanced app window management.
"I'm told that this year's upgrade will focus on productivity, multitasking and app window management — with an eye on the device operating more like a Mac," Gurman wrote. "It's been a long time coming, with power users pleading with Apple to make the tablet more powerful."
While the update won't transform iPads into running full macOS, the changes are expected to satisfy users who have long complained that iPad hardware capabilities far exceed what the software allows them to do. The powerful M4-powered iPad Pro, released last year, particularly highlighted this disparity.
The update would build upon previous attempts to improve iPad productivity. Apple introduced Stage Manager in iPadOS 16 back in 2022, allowing for windowed apps and external display support, but many users found the implementation lacking compared to desktop operating systems.
iPadOS 19 is expected to be unveiled at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 9, 2025, alongside iOS 19, macOS 16, and other software updates. This year's WWDC is rumored to showcase major design overhauls across Apple's operating systems.
