Indian-origin cricketer wins 2025 Wisden Schools Cricketer of the Year award

Aryaman Varma, an 18-year-old leg-spinner and captain of Eton College, has been honored with the Wisden Schools Cricketer of the Year award after a stellar 2024 season, marked by 51 wickets and over 300 runs.

Aryaman Varma, an 18-year-old leg-spinner, was awarded the 2025 Wisden Schools Cricketer of the Year award on Tuesday.
By winning this award, Varma, the captain of Eton College, joins the esteemed company of Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler, who were the first and third winners of this title, respectively.

The Eton College captain's outstanding performance in the 2024 season saw Aryaman take 51 wickets at just over 12 runs apiece with his leg-spin, as well as scoring over 300 runs.

Varma was also nominated for the award last year, when he was among the four boys shortlisted after taking 45 wickets. However, he narrowly missed out.

Aryaman's family hails from Delhi. His father, Munish Varma, has played badminton for Delhi. Aryaman was born in London but spent his early years in Mumbai, where he and his elder brother, Aarav, developed a deep love for cricket.

For the past three years, Aryaman Varma has been a net bowler with the Delhi Capitals. Earlier this year, the youngster was part of the winning squad for the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 2025.
In his last three years with the Delhi Capitals, Varma has spent considerable time with Kuldeep Yadav, who is mentoring him.

Varma was at Surrey CCC for five years, where he was consistently among the top three wicket-takers across all age groups. The talented leg-spinner left Surrey last season to pursue further opportunities. He has played a couple of 2nd XI games for Kent, one against Zimbabwe A, where he returned with bowling figures of 0/14 in four overs, and one match against Essex 2XI, where he picked up three wickets in 10 overs.
