Connor McDavid Must Rise As The Oilers Fight To Regain Dominance

The Edmonton Oilers find themselves in a real bind at this point of the season. Seven losses in their last ten games have put the team under severe pressure. Following the recent tough and heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres, the inconsistencies of the team are starting to worry some. The Oilers have the firepower only, execution is lacking. Well, on their way to re-establish momentum for the Edmonton Oilers, Connor McDavid must step up once again. His skill is beyond doubt but, getting the Oilers through this tough patch will require him to take his game to an entirely different level.

Costly turnovers have been a major concern in Edmonton. They have excellent puck control and offensive zone play, but their mistakes have given the opponents easy chances to go on the attack. Their defense has improved, but it remains inconsistent. The Oilers averaged 3.23 goals scored and 2.94 goals against. Their power plays are a valuable strength ranked fifth in the league (26.6%), while their penalty kill is a major weakness, ranked 25th.

Edmonton's struggles were again evident in their game against the Sabres: Tage Thompson gave the Sabres a lead early in the game, then Darnell Nurse replied for the Oilers in the second. Albeit for the visitors, Alex Tuch scored again prior to McDavid creating for Evan Bouchard one more time with a power-play goal to level the score. However, Thompson struck again for Buffalo in the third to seal this ballgame. Stuart Skinner was good for 20 saves but couldn't win. Meanwhile, Leon Draisaitl extended his point streak to 15 games, underscoring his importance to the team’s offensive propulsion.

Before a successful playoff run, the Oilers need to get out of this rut and on top of teams like Winnipeg, Florida, and Colorado. The McDavid-Draisaitl duo is still the mainstay of the Edmonton offense, but if they are to go far in the playoffs, they will also need to refine their defensive play and avoid the mistakes that have proven so costly. The Oilers still can turn things around, and the starting point is getting McDavid back in elite form. If he can step up and put on the sort of show he's done in the past, it will give Edmonton's playoff hopes visible promise.
