Varanasi: The Staff Development Cell (SDC) of BHU organised a capacity-building programme on ‘university governance' on Thursday with an aim to boost the competencies of the non-teaching staff by providing insights into effective governance practices, contemporary trends in higher education, and the evolving role of administration in academic institutions.
The event was inaugurated by BHU assistant registrar Raj Kumar Soni in the presence of SDC coordinator Prof Sujit Kumar Dubey.
Soni emphasised the vital role of governance in the functioning of universities and the need to build a transparent, accountable and inclusive administrative culture.
"Universities are ecosystems of knowledge and leadership, and effective governance is foundational to ethical leadership, wise decision-making and achieving the university's broader vision and mission," Soni said. Registrar of the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies Sunita Chandra was felicitated as the resource person for the programme.
In her address on the theme "role of administration in university governance," she discussed a wide range of topics, including current challenges in the higher education sector, the importance of skill development, and the need to address the rural-urban divide in education.
She highlighted the significance of revamping state-level higher education institutions, fostering foreign collaborations, encouraging interdisciplinary learning, and implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in its true spirit.
Chandra underlined the shift needed towards producing job creators instead of job seekers and spoke on the evolving role of the
University Grants Commission (UGC) in promoting academic excellence and community engagement.
"About 25% of India's population is below the age of 25 and aspires to grow through quality education. If tradition joins hands with modernity in higher education, India has the potential to reclaim its position as a Vishwaguru," she said.
