Addiction rate sees no drop
Trichy: Despite the growing awareness of alcohol addiction, the situation in Trichy remains largely unchanged. TOI reached out to three prominent de-addiction centres in the city, which reported stable admission numbers with no significant increase or decline.
The de-addiction centre at Trichy's MGMGH, recently upgraded to a 20-bed facility, treated 23 more patients in 2024 compared to 2023. KLA Trust (IRCA de-addiction centre) recorded nearly the same number of patients as the previous year, while Sunrise de-addiction centre treated 18 more.
These centres offer a 21-day detox program, including group therapy sessions and daily motivational gatherings. Patients also participate in activities like board games and yoga to reinforce positive thinking.
However, relapse remains a major challenge. "Many patients relapse due to a lack of proper follow-up," said Dr. A Niranjana Devi, psychiatrist at KAPV Medical College. She emphasized that avoiding triggers and staying engaged in productive activities are key to preventing relapse. "Keeping a list of the positive changes experienced during recovery can also make a significant difference," she added.
