Kanthalloor Sree Mahadeva Temple revival to begin soon
T'puram: After years of delays and uncertainty, city corporation is finally set to begin redevelopment of Kanthalloor Mahadeva Temple at Valiyasala, a site of immense historical and cultural significance. The temple, which once housed the renowned Kanthalloor Sala—often referred to as the "Nalanda of South India"—was in a state of neglect, prompting long-standing demands from devotees and the local community for its restoration.
Though the civic body initially allocated Rs 2.5 crore for the project two years ago, implementation delays led to cost escalations. In the 2024-25 budget, corporation increased the allocation to Rs 5 crore, but the project failed to take off. Now, to finally move forward, the upcoming corporation budget will earmark Rs 10 crore for the redevelopment, with work expected to start within two months. The project is part of the city's heritage conservation efforts.
Valiyasala ward councillor S Krishnakumar assured that this time, the redevelopment will proceed without further setbacks. "It is true that the project was delayed, which led to cost escalations. However, we are fully committed to ensuring the redevelopment begins in the coming months. The work is expected to start in May. In the first phase, the Sivelipatha (the deity's circumambulation path) will be completed," he said.
According to temple authorities, the circumambulation path is currently in a deteriorated state and new granite will be laid to restore it. Additionally, the temple's roof developed leaks and will be replaced with a new structure. The corporation council approved the temple's development in Jan this year.
As part of the proposal, all electrical and communication cables leading to the temple will be placed underground and eco-friendly pathways will be constructed to enhance the surroundings. Historians believe that Kanthalloor Sala, which existed in this area between the 9th and 10th centuries, was one of the most revered educational institutions of its time. The ancient university was reportedly destroyed during attacks by Chola kings. A stone inscription related to Kanthalloor Sala, along with an old well, was discovered near the temple, adding to its historical significance.
