Rajkot: A major fire broke out in the compound of the old sub-jail located in Bhuj town on Tuesday, reducing several vehicles seized in different criminal cases to ashes.
There were no casualties in the blaze that erupted around 3:30pm, Kutch West police said.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Kutch West superintendent of police (SP), deputy SP of Bhuj division, local police from Bhuj B-division, and the fire brigade teams rushed to the spot. A team of 22 firefighters were involved in the dousing the blaze using four fire tenders. It took about 90 minutes to bring the fire under control, said Sachin Parmar of Bhuj fire station.
According to Sachin Parmar, the fire brigade prioritized containing the flames that were spreading rapidly near the residential areas adjacent to the sub-jail premises.
While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, it was confirmed that a large number seized vehicles including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers parked in the jail compound were destroyed.
The intensity of the flames was so severe that thick plumes of smoke were visible from a distance.
