Rajkot: The 32-year-old woman's decision to end her life with her four children in Jamnagar's Dhrol reportedly stemmed from acute financial difficulties faced by the family and despair over their upbringing.
On Thursday, the woman, Bhanu Toriya, allegedly threw her two sons and two daughters into a well near their house in Sumra village and then jumped in herself. The bodies were retrieved by the villagers, who then alerted the police and emergency responders.
Dhrol police station inspector HV Rathod said the statements from the deceased's family and villagers were recorded. Preliminary investigation revealed that Toriya's two children went to school and two others to the anganwadi. On some pretext, she brought them home and committed suicide. Her husband, Jiva, went to graze their sheep and goats.
Police said they would record statements from the teachers at the school where her two children studied.
Mongha Toriya, the deceased's uncle-in-law, told reporters on Friday that poor financial condition forced her to take the extreme step. "She was worried about how to educate and raise her children due to their weak financial situation," he said.
In the coming days, statements from the teachers at the school where the children studied will be recorded as well. On Thursday, it was found that the woman's husband, Jivabhai Toriya, went to graze sheep and goats.
The case has been registered as an accidental death under Section 194 at Dhrol Police Station.
The children were aged between three years and 10 years, police sources said. They were identified as Ritvik (3), Aayush (10), and daughters Anandi (four) and Aaju (eight).
