PUNE: Maharashtra minister Prakash Abitar stated on Friday that a high-ranking health department official will investigate the case where Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune reportedly denied admission to a pregnant woman because she could not pay an advance deposit of Rs 10 lakh.
The woman, identified as Tanisha Bhise, who was the spouse of BJP MLC Amit Gorkhe's personal assistant, passed away following the delivery of twin daughters at a different medical facility.
Abitar said, "We have asked the deputy director of the health department to inquire into what exactly happened at the hospital. After we receive his report, we will take necessary action if the hospital is found to be in the wrong."
Opposition party members, including those from Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and NCP (SP), demonstrated outside Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, with some protesters throwing coins at hospital personnel.
Authorities deployed substantial police presence around the hospital premises to maintain order and prevent any disturbances.
On Thursday, MLC Gorkhe alleged that the hospital refused to admit the patient despite promising immediate payment of Rs 3 lakh, and stated that even communication from Mantralaya failed to elicit any response from the institution.
The healthcare facility dismissed these claims and stated that the patient's relatives had provided inaccurate information.
Dr Dhananjay Kelkar, the medical director of the hospital, indicated that they would compile a comprehensive report about the situation and forward it to the health department.
