Patna: CM
Nitish Kumar welcomed the Centre's decision to include caste enumeration as part of the next census in the country.
The decision by the NDA govt led by PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday will impact the coming assembly elections due in Bihar this year. It is evident from the fast reactions of the ruling NDA and the opposition INDI Alliance netas.
BJP netas called it a "surgical strike" on the opposition's dream to come to power in Bihar and NDA has tried to rob Congress and RJD of its main poll agenda, while the opposition will woo the poor and backward, EBC and dalit voters by promising them increase in their share in the power structure and the bureaucracy, as per their population in the state, after the census report.
The caste survey conducted in the state identified around 94 lakh families below the poverty line and the state govt promised Rs 2 lakh to each of the families.
Nitish posted on his X handle: "The central govt's decision to conduct caste census is welcome. Our demand for conducting caste census is old. It is a matter of great happiness that the Union govt has decided to conduct a caste census, which will reveal the number of people of different classes to facilitate in making plans for their uplift and development. This will accelerate the development of the country. Congratulations and thanks to the PM Narendra Modi ji for the decision to conduct a caste census."
Parliamentary affairs minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary told this newspaper that RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav was the leader of the opposition when the all-party delegation met PM Modi in Aug, 2021 with the demand to include caste-based survey in the ongoing census.
"In fact, Congress's Rahul Gandhi and some other INDI Alliance netas had rejected CM Nitish's proposal to make caste census the foremost issue before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. It was only when the state govt under CM Nitish successfully completed the caste survey in Bihar and published its report that Rahul Gandhi started drumming the issue. It was on the initiative and insistence of CM Nitish that the assembly had passed the resolution twice in this regard," said Choudhary, who was the assembly Speaker at that time.
BJP state president Dilip Jaiswal said Congress has till date only done politics of caste appeasement while PM Modi is engaged in the social uplift of the downtrodden with ‘Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas and Sabka Vishwas'.
