Noida: Over 15,000 residents of Alpha 1 and 2 in Greater Noida faced a water shortage for more than 36 hours after the main pipeline near Jaypee Golf Course roundabout burst on Saturday evening.
Although GNIDA deployed water tankers, residents said these measures were insufficient for summer needs. Officials said normal supply would resume by evening.
GNIDA deployed tankers as water trickled from taps, but residents maintained there weren't enough tankers to meet the demand.
Initially, people relied on stored-up water and dismal trickles from the taps, while water from the broken pipeline flooded the area in no time. Supply remained disrupted even after 36 hours, as the pipeline could not be repaired, due to which, residents of sectors Alpha 1 and 2 took to the streets and said they would protest if the problem isn't fixed.
"This is the main water pipeline in the area which corroded from the inside, had multiple leakages, and eventually burst. We initially tried to fix the leakage through welding and restoring the pipe, but the corrosion of the pipe weakened it significantly. Hence, we had to get a new patch made and welded. For this, we had to first dewater the broken pipeline area, which was full of mud and concrete. All this has taken a lot of time. But we expect to complete the work soon and resume supply from Monday evening," Gurvinder Singh, senior manager of water department, GNIDA, told TOI.
