NEW DELHI: The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) will be inaugurated in June,
Gautam Adani, chairman of
Adani Group that is building this upcoming hub, said on Sunday after visiting the site.
An airport gets operational a month or so after the ribbon cutting as multiple agencies, including security, and stakeholders, like airlines, start setting up systems after inauguration, a process which takes time.
Goa’s second airport at Mopa, for instance, was inaugurated on Dec 11, 2022.
Domestic flights there started on Jan 5, 2023, and international ones on July 21, 2023.
NMIA has the option of starting with domestic flights first if the airport gets operational in a month or so after the inauguration or with both domestic and international flights in case the wait is slightly longer to avoid further delay in the latter.
“…a world-class airport (is) taking shape. Set for inauguration this June, it will redefine connectivity and growth. A true gift to India! Kudos to the Adani Airports team and partners for making this vision a reality,” Adani said in a social media post.
The Union aviation ministry had recently reviewed progress at the Navi Mumbai and Greater Noida airports that were initially expected to get inaugurated in May. Since both these secondary airports still need more work, the same will now happen a little later this summer.
It is learnt in Navi Mumbai’s case, there was work remaining on the terminal side and taxiways among other areas.
Originally, NMIA was to start operations with a capacity of one crore passengers annually. In July 2021, the Adani Group took over the management control of Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), which had won the bid to build NMIA.
On his first site, Adani had directed that NMIA open with double the capacity and so it is now going to open with a terminal that can handle two crore passengers annually.
“Adani visited the upcoming NMIA in Navi Mumbai and reviewed the progress of the project,” said a NMIA spokesperson.
