Amravati: The city has geared up to host the 4th edition of All India Federation Cup Kabaddi tournament for men and women from May 2. The three-day event, to be held at Gadgenagar here, marks the return of big time kabaddi to the city after more than a decade.
The tourney is being jointly organized by Amateur Kabaddi Association Vidarbha, Amravati District Amateur Kabaddi Association, and Shodh Pratisthan.
Speakin at a press conference here today, Jitu Thakur and MLC Sanjay Khodke said that the tourney will form the basis for selection of Indian men and women teams for the world cup and national selection committee will stay put here on all three days.
The duo said that the tourney will be played on the lines of pro-kabaddi and in view of the summer, matches would held from 5pm everyday and continue till late night. They said that all the matches will be played on mats and seating arrangement for 5,000 spectators will be in place.
Nine teams in men and women sections each will participate in the tourney. Thakur and Khodke said that Amravati will be the first venue where Federation Cup for men and women will be played simultaneously at one venue.
In men's section, Indian Railways, Punjab, UP, Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Goa and Vidarbha will be seen in action while in women 's section, Indian Railways, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu , Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Vidarbha will be seen in action.
Several national and pro-kabaddi league stars will be seen exhibiting their skills before Amravati spectators.
Men's team selectors Anup Kumar, Rakesh Kumar and Deepak Huda and women's team selectors Mamatha Pujari, Tejaswini BV, and Pooja Sharma will be at the venue on all three days, said Jitu Thakur, AKFI general secretary.
