Kalyan: With the objective of integrating the transgender people into the mainstream of society and to make them stand on their own feet by providing them employment and every possible facility, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has organised the Kinnar Mahotsav on Monday.
This will be the first such programme organised by any civic body for transgender people in the country.
Apart from dance, music, and stand-up comedy programmes organised by the transgender community, schemes related to their upliftment would be launched, the civic body said. The registration of transgender people will also be done on the occasion.
Based on the concept of KDMC commissioner Dr Indurani Jakhar, this programme is being organised by the Social Development Department of KDMC in collaboration with an organisation called Kinnar Asmita, where big religious leaders and prominent personalities of transgenders from every corner of the country are going to participate.
Sanjay Jadhav, Deputy Municipal Commissioner of the Social Development Department of KDMC, said, "In this festival, information will be given about the various programmes being run and planned by KDMC to give to transgenders in society. In this, on the lines of women's savings groups, savings groups will be formed for transgenders as well, which will provide means of employment to them. Apart from this, in future, there are plans to provide separate beds for treatment to transgenders in both the major hospitals of KDMC and seperate toilet facilities."
Jadhav further said, "By forming saving groups, we will give them training for various self-businesses and will provide a place for doing business for their upliftment in society."
If sources are to be believed, KDMC will be the first civic body in the country to work for transgenders on a large scale.
