FIR against SP workers for burning Delhi CM’s effigy in Hapur
Meerut: A case has been registered against over 50 Samajwadi Party (SP) workers, including Hapur's district president, for allegedly burning an effigy of Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta.
The protest on Tuesday at Hapur's Tehsil Chaupla road was held in response to Gupta's "tap thief" remark on former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav, made during a television interview.
SHO Munish Pratap said, "The group did not have permission to hold the protest and obstructed traffic. They burnt the CM's effigy and used inappropriate language. When the police tried to intervene, they got involved in an altercation and even resorted to abusive language."
Police have registered a case under various BNS sections, including 191(2) (Rioting), 352, (Intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of peace), 356(2) (Defamation), 127(2) (Wrongful confinement), and 223 (Disobeying a lawful order issued by a public servant), against district president Anand Gurjar and fifty others.
"Section 125 of BNSS is already in place in Hapur district under the orders of the district magistrate, and such protests cannot be allowed," added the SHO.
In response to the police actions, Gurjar accused the govt of dictatorial behaviour. "Our party leader is disrespected on national television, and when we protest, the police arrest us and take legal action. This is against the Constitution and democracy," Gurjar said.
