Meerut: An FIR was lodged at Civil Lines police station against a BJP councillor and his seven aides for allegedly shooting a municipal corporation driver responsible for garbage collection in the city. Ravindra Singh, the ward 18 councillor, was overpowered by municipal officials, beaten up and handed over to cops.
Police said the incident took place on Thursday morning when Singh arrived at the municipal depot and allegedly opened firing indiscriminately. Meanwhile, the victim, Avinash Kumar, a resident of Lawad village under Incholi limits, sustained a bullet injury in his leg.
SP city Ayush Vikram Singh said, "The victim was rushed to district hospital and is said to be in stable condition. A case has been lodged and Ravindra has been arrested. Other accused will be arrested soon."
Rajesh Kumar, the depot in-charge, said, "On Thursday morning, Ravindra called me claiming that I'd removed a garbage collection van from his ward. We've the audio clip. In the audio, Ravindra can be heard abusing and threatening me with dire consequences. I told him that I didn't remove his van; it was a call from a field inspector, which stemmed his resentment, and he, along with a dozen associates, reached the depot and started firing indiscriminately."
"A few videos of the incident were widely circulated in which other corporation employees retaliated with sticks and overpowered Ravindra on the spot, seizing his pistol, while his accomplices managed to flee. Ravindra also sustained head injuries," said police.
