Bijnor: A local court on Monday sentenced three men to life imprisonment for the kidnapping and murder of mini-truck driver Sanjay Agarwal in 2012. The court also fined each of them Rs 47,000, of which half of the amount will be given to the victim's wife.
Irfaan from Haridwar's Mangalore, and Israar Ahmed and Anees from Bijnor's Kiratpur were convicted by the court of additional district and session judge Ram Avtar Yadav. Anees's wife, Naseema, was acquitted due to lack of evidence.
On Oct 15, 2012, Agarwal, a resident of Kiratpur town, left for Haridwar's Jwalapur in his mini-truck at 7 pm, telling his family members that he would be transporting household items. When his wife called him around 9:30 pm, he said that he was having tea in Chidiapur area of Uttarakhand's Haridwar district. Later, he could not be contacted on phone, so his brother, Ankit Agarwal, filed a missing person's complaint.
On Oct 19, police found his abandoned vehicle near the Haridwar railway station. Local police approached Bijnor police and informed them about the vehicle. They talked to Agarwal's family who told them that he was last seen with Anees, Irfaan, and Israar.
Bijnor superintendent of police (SP) Abhishek Jha said that during investigation, it came to light that Irfan, Anees, and Israr planned to rob the victim's mini-truck. Irfan booked the vehicle on the pretext that he would be transporting goods from Mangalore and made Agarwal drink alcohol during the journey.
The three then kidnapped and killed the victim on the Haridwar-Roorkee road and threw his body in the Sonali river. His body was found by the Roorkee police and a case was registered against them under IPC sections 364 (kidnapping) and 302 (murder), among others.
