MANGALORE: The Flight data recorder (FDR), popularly known as the Black Box, which is crucial to understand what went wrong after Air India Express flight IX 812 landed at Bajpe airport in Mangalore, has still not been recovered by authorities till late on Saturday evening.
Reason: Only the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has the authority to recover the Black Box.

Bajpe airport general manager Peter Abraham told TOI that in case of an accident the airport personnel can only mount search and rescue (SAR) operations and not go into recovering of the Black Box. ‘‘After SAR, the area and the remains should be left untouched for the DGCA officials to conduct investigations and recover the Black Box,’’ said Abraham.
The DGCA officials arrived 7pm on Saturday and they visited the site. Sources at the airport said the officials will launch operations to recover the Black Box only on Sunday morning. When Union civil aviation minister Praful Patel was queried about this aspect during interaction with media earlier, he smugly said locating the black should not be a problem as the entire wreckage has been found.
The Black Box is not actually painted black, but with heat-resistant bright orange paint. The unit is usually mounted in the aircraft’s tail section.
