Special police clean Thamirabarani River, raise awareness
Madurai: The 9th Battalion of Tamil Nadu Special Police (TNSP) conducted a cleaning drive along the Thamirabarani River in Papanasam on Sunday, ahead of International Water Day. Led by commandant T Karthikeyan and deputy commandant R Sridevi, officers and constables cleared large amounts of discarded clothes, plastic covers, and pooja items from the riverbanks. Social workers and residents also participated in the effort.
Surprised by the volume of cloth waste, the police and volunteers urged pilgrims and the public to avoid dumping solid waste into the river. In an awareness drive following the cleanup, they interacted with visitors, advising them to use designated bins provided by village and temple authorities.
Officials emphasized the importance of preserving the Thamirabarani, a crucial water source for Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, and Kanyakumari districts, and called for public support in maintaining its cleanliness.
