Ludhiana: In two separate incidents, three individuals were charged with acts of cruelty against stray dogs and pet pigeons. A man was accused of killing two puppies and injuring another, while two others allegedly killed a friend's six pet pigeons.
Varinder Singh of Ranian village's Ranjit Avenue was booked after a disturbing video surfaced showing him thrashing puppies. Two of the pups died, and a third was injured severely. The footage was shared with animal welfare activists, who filed a complaint with the cops. Mani Singh, president of the Help for Animals organisation, lodged the complaint. "I received the video via WhatsApp from an animal lover. It showed a man treating puppies brutally. We took action and submitted the video as evidence to the cops," he said.
Dehlon police have registered a case under Section 325 (mischief by killing or maiming an animal) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Investigating officer ASI Ranjit Singh confirmed that the accused had not yet been arrested.
In another case, Jodhan police charged two men, Amarjit Singh and Gurpreet Singh, with killing a friend's six pigeons at Saholi village. The accused allegedly entered the complainant's home under the pretense of checking the pigeons' speed but twisted their necks instead.
Parminder Singh, owner of the pigeons, said he participated in village-level pigeon racing events. "They were my friends and also kept pigeons. On March 16, they came to my rooftop, opened the cage, and killed six of my birds before fleeing," he said. Inspector Davinder Singh, SHO of Jodhan, said the accused were reportedly intoxicated during the incident. A case under sections 325 (mischief by killing or maiming an animal) and 3(5) (common intent in crime) of the BNS has been registered. Both accused have a prior drug peddling case.
