Elocutionist and actor Sujoy Prasad Chatterjee and his friend, actress
Sudipa Basu decided to grab “a quick lunch” after watching a play at the Academy of Fine Arts
on Sunday afternoon. “As we approached the restaurant, the gateman shouted at me saying, ‘aapto lungi pehne huye hai. Mujhe sochna padega ke aapko andar jane de ya nehi,’” said an exasperated Sujoy.
But the ordeal didn’t end here. “Soon the manager came, checked me out and then said, ‘yes you can enter’. And that is when I lost it. I said, ‘How dare you judge my wardrobe’, and we refused to eat there,” the artiste adds.
Sujoy soon took the matter to the social media and posted his picture saying, “Ok guys this is what happened a few minutes back. Actress Sudipa Basu and I wanted to grab some lunch after a play and thought we would go to WALDORF on Russell Street. Once we arrived, the gate-man stopped me and said, "Let me check if I can allow you because you are wearing a LUNGI". The manager came out and looked at me, checked out my attire and approved. Ofcourse he didn’t apologise and said, " The gate-man said that you were wearing a LUNGI and I had to check". So this is Calcutta in 2017. Should we not boycott this restaurant? By the way this is what I was wearing today. (sic)”
While recalling his ordeal, Sujoy also said, “I took it to the social media and there are people who are reacting to it. But imagine those who don’t even have that privilege.” When we contacted the restaurant, a senior staff member, who refused to disclose his identity, confirmed the incident. He also said that the eatery has no dress code and this is stray incident, which will not be repeated.
