KOLKATA: A Class V student of a school in north Kolkata was slapped and beaten up so badly by her teacher on Thursday that she started bleeding and fell unconscious. Her only fault was that she could not answer a question correctly. The severe punishment has left the girl traumatised.
Priyanka Prasad, a student at Metropolitan Institute (Main) for Girls, was asked a question by her geography teacher, Dipasri Chakraborty, during the second period on Thursday.
When Priyanka failed to answer correctly, Chakraborty first scolded her. She then hit her with a ruler and slapped her near her right ear. The sobbing girl was also asked to remain standing for the rest of the class.
When Chakraborty left the class, Priyanka almost collapsed and blood started oozing from her ear. Her terrified classmates reported the matter to the headmistress, Jaya Bhattacharya . "I rushed to the classroom when the students informed me about the incident and found Priyanka trembling and bleeding profusely from her ear," said Bhattacharya.
Bhattacharya took Priyanka to a child specialist, Dr Ankhi Ranjan Bhattacharya, near the school. She was given primary treatment and medication. Her parents were informed later.
Her father, Subhash Prasad, submitted a written complaint against the teacher to the headmistress . Subhash has also lodged a complaint with Amherst Street police. "My daughter was running a temperature when I went to fetch her. She fainted on reaching home. That was when I decided to lodge a complaint with police as well," she said.
The headmistress has promised to take the matter up with the school management. "Whatever may be the student's fault, corporal punishment is not encouraged here. The incident has left me disturbed. I am submitting a report about the incident to the school management committee , who will decide on a course of action," she said.
