Police resort to lathicharge after clash during Shiv Jayanti procession in Kolhapur
Kolhapur: Police resorted to a mild lathicharge on Tuesday night at Binkhambi Ganesh mandir, on the Mahadwar Road, after two mandals clashed during the traditional Shiv Jayanti procession.
"A dispute broke out between two mandals, one from Maharana Pratap Chowk and the other from Pachgaon, near the Binkhambi Ganesh temple, over the continuation of the procession. A minor lathicharge was necessary to disperse the crowd," said Juna Rajwada inspector Sanjeev Jhade.
The use of high-decibel sound systems in the processions by several groups also irked many residents of the city on Tuesday. Police department will take action against the mandals for using high-decibel sound systems in the processions.
Inspector Jhade said, "Ten mandals will face action for violating the noise limit during the processions taken out on the occasion of Shiv Jayanti on Tuesday night. The noise levels were recorded during the procession, and it was found that 10 mandals violated the sound level norms. Cases will be filed in court against the office bearers of the mandals concerned."
Overall, 10 mandals from Mangalwar Peth, Ganji Maal, Khandoba, Pachgaon, Shahupuri, Waghachi Talim, Maharana Pratap Chowk, and Rajarampuri areas violated the noise limit. On Wednesday evening as well, a few processions using high-decibel sound systems were taken out in the city by a few mandals.
