Kottayam: Kovalam MLA M Vincent reached Puthuppally in the early hours of Friday and paid tributes to former chief minister late Oommen Chandy at his grave before attending the inauguration of Vizhinjam International Seaport.
Vincent's visit assumed significance in the wake of controversies over parties claiming credit for the port project.
He arrived at around 5.45am at St George Orthodox Church in Puthuppally, where Chandy was laid to rest. He lit a candle and offered floral tributes at the tomb of Chandy. He was accompanied by the former chief minister's son MLA Chandy Oommen and other regional Congress leaders.
Vincent said that the Vizhinjam port is the result of the hard work of Chandy and the project is now being commissioned without road or rail connectivity. He also said that the port should be inaugurated after paying homage to Chandy. Vincent has been advocating for naming the port after Chandy.
Meanwhile, Chandy Oommen said that the state govt is scared of even the memories of Chandy. That is why opposition leader VD Satheesan was not invited, he added.
