JAIPUR: A 26-year-old woman, her lover, and his friend were arrested for allegedly attempting to murder her husband by injecting him with a lethal dose of potassium, the Jaipur (Rural) police said Tuesday.
The conspiracy came to light after Chandwaji police received a call from NIMS Hospital in the early hours of Monday, informing them that two unidentified persons, posing as nursing staff, tried to inject a patient named Devnarayan Gurjar inside the hospital ward.
Upon reaching the hospital, the police detained Pawan Kumar Pathak (37) of Dausa and Anuj Sharma (30) of Alwar, who were caught by hospital staff while attempting the act. The duo initially claimed to be nurses at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Jaipur.
Jaipur Rural SP Anand Sharma said investigations revealed a murder plot hatched by Devnarayan's wife, Manisha Gurjar (26), who was in a romantic relationship with Pawan Pathak for nearly a year. The couple's strained marriage reportedly pushed Manisha and her lover to plan Devnarayan's murder and make it appear as a natural death.
"Pawan obtained potassium-filled syringes with help of his friend Anuj, intending to inject the patient through a cannula line at around 3.15am. Such an injection can stop the heart in minutes, mimicking a silent heart attack," said a senior officer.
The police said that to remove Devnarayan, the accused arranged for potassium injections with the help of his friend Anuj. Upon inquiring about these potassium injections from the medical officer on duty, it was revealed that these injections are administered very slowly with liquid under a doctor's supervision when there is a potassium deficiency in a patient's body. However, if this injection is directly injected into the patient's body through a cannula, the patient's heart stops within minutes, leading to certain death, similar to a silent heart attack.
"Potassium chloride, when injected in high doses, can cause cardiac arrest if not administered under medical supervision. Two filled syringes, an empty vial, and the motorcycle used in the crime were seized from the accused," said an official.
All three—Manisha Gurjar, Pawan Kumar Pathak, and Anuj Sharma—were arrested and booked under charges of attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy.
