Lorry driver hurt after falling from police station building
Hyderabad: A lorry driver suffered injuries after he fell from a police station building in Khammam district on Saturday. The incident took place at Banjar Police Station. The lorry driver's family alleged that it was the police who pushed him from the top of the building. The police, on the contrary, said that he attempted suicide while in police custody.
Police said that the lorry driver, K Jeevan Kumar, was travelling from Khammam to Andhra Pradesh with a load of cement. Kumar allegedly consumed liquor at two different places. A cleaner who was travelling in the same lorry found that Kumar was not in a position to drive the vehicle and was driving dangerously.
"With utmost difficulty, the cleaner made Kumar stop the lorry, and he got down. The cleaner made a phone call to Dial-100, informing about the dangerous driving of Kumar in a drunken condition. When police, knowing about his route, tried to stop him at Polepally, he escaped by refusing to stop the lorry. Finally, he was caught at Kallur," Khammam police said.
When Kumar was made to undergo a Blood Alcohol Count (BAC) test, his result was 312 mg/100 ml. He was brought to the police station. After some time, he allegedly went to the first floor. On seeing him missing, when police reached the first floor, he was allegedly seen jumping. "Before our constables could react, he jumped and fell down. Immediately, he was shifted to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a hip fracture," police said.
Kumar's family alleged that he was harassed and later pushed from the first floor. They also alleged that he was verbally abused, referring to caste.
