Singer Dwipen Barua, many of whose golden hits were picturised on Nipon Goswami, fondly remembers the actor. It is difficult to recollect the over 50-year-long journey that Nipon da and I shared. I have done playback singing for him in several Assamese blockbusters including Dr Bezbarua, Maanab Aru Daanab, Ajali Nobou, Mukuta and Kokadeuta Nati Aru Hati. It gives me immense joy to see that people still remember those movies.
Dr Bezbaruah, directed by my brother Brojens Barua, was a superhit where Nipon da showed marvellous acting skills.
I call him Nipon da because he was about seven years older than I.
We would hardly get an opportunity to work together as songs would be recorded much before the films were shot. Nipon da used to lip sync to the songs that would be recorded long ago. We would get to meet when he would come home to discuss movies with my elder brothers. That is how I got close to him. I received a lot of appreciation from many who felt that my voice was perfectly suited to do playback for Nipon da. In fact, Nipon da also told me about this several times. That would always make me happy. I used to record songs visualising him in studios, which perhaps helped me lend a voice that seamlessly blended with his. In fact, his fans and well-wishers would actually believe that the songs were sung by the actor himself and he would often be requested to croon those numbers.
Several years ago, I was recording a few songs for some movies of Nipon da at a studio in Kolkata. He was there shooting a Bengali movie and he made a sudden visit to our studio. I was pleasantly surprised to see him. I told him that I was recording songs for his movies to which he said he knew that and that is why he visited the studio. It was a moment I will never forget.
