Guwahati: Congress brought forth an adjournment motion in the Assam assembly on Monday, seeking deliberation over the recent assault on MP Rakibul Hussain. The party sought details of the investigation so far and requested the action taken report.
The members of the party and and Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi walked out of the assembly for approximately an hour after speaker Biswajit Daimary rejected the adjournment motion.
Parliamentary affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patowary told the House that two individuals — Basiruddin and Abdul Khaleque — were apprehended by the police on charges of physically assaulting Congress' Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain in Nagaon last month.
The minister said Hussain and his PSO lodged separate FIRs with the police, collectively naming 22 people. He added that numerous suspects remain absconding and police are trying to apprehend them. Patowary said the DIG of central range is overseeing the investigation.
He added that state govt never compromises on the security of anyone with threat perception. Countering the minister's response, leader of the opposition and senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia alleged that despite informing the police control room and the special branch control room of the MP's programme, insufficient security was provided.
The minister said police provided protection at the venue, but the incident occurred about a kilometre away. "FIRs were registered around 12 hours post-incident and the MP underwent medical exam around 24 hours later," he added.
Subsequently, Congress members staged a demonstration in the well of the House, demanding deliberation on the issue and arrest of the prime accused involved in the assault. However, their adjournment motion was rejected by the Speaker.
