Margao:Rama Pednekar, 60, from Curchorem, died of a suspected heart attack while attending the Maha Kumbh mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Pednekar travelled to the religious gathering on a special train service provided by state govt.
According to sources, the massive crowds at the event caused Pednekar significant distress, leading to the fatal cardiac episode.
Minister for social welfare Subhash Phal Dessai said that the incident took place after Pednekar was separated from his group in the crowd of pilgrims. Following a desperate search, group members learned that Pednekar was rushed to a local hospital, where medical authorities declared him dead.
In light of the incident, the social welfare minister has recommended that only individuals in good health should participate in the pilgrimage using govt-sponsored transportation.
Officials are currently working to transport Pednekar’s remains to Goa, he said.
