NEW DELHI: With the arrest of a 22-year-old Noida resident, the police claimed to have worked out over 30 burglaries and car thefts in Jalvayu Vihar, Noida, and south Delhi. The police claimed to have recovered three stolen cars and a motorcycle.

his ability to commit regular thefts and evade arrest had earned him the sobriquet charles sobhraj junior. deputy commissioner of police (south) p kamaraj said guneet had become one of the most wanted auto-lifters in noida. recently, he had reportedly started lifting cars from lajpat nagar and greater kailash as well. most of the vehicles guneet allegedly stole were luxury cars. a special team, set up to investigate the thefts, learnt that the accused was expected to come to sainik farms on tuesday. a trap was laid and guneet was arrested while allegedly driving a maruti esteem which had been stolen from lajpat nagar on new year's eve. during questioning guneet reportedly confessed to having committed several other crimes, said police officials. his confession is, however, not admissible as evidence. his interrogation reportedly led to the recovery of four stolen vehicles, including two maruti esteem cars, a maruti 800 and a motorcycle. all the vehicles had been stolen from south delhi. police officials said guneet had been studying in air force school, subroto park, before dropping out. the police claimed that guneet first stole cars and then used them to commit burglaries. most of his crimes were committed in jalvayu vihar. he reportedly told the police that he used to steal luxury cars to avoid attracting attention and police scrutiny. he reportedly told the police that he would abandon the cars after committing a theft, taking away only the car stereo. in 1996 guneet had been arrested by the noida police. the police had at the time recovered three stolen vehicles from him. after a recent spate of vehicle thefts and burglaries in noida, the police were desperately looking for guneet. in an effort to evade arrest, he had reportedly shifted to lajpat nagar. youth killed: a 28-year-old unemployed man, identified as sanjeet, was found murdered by the roadside in the sultanpuri area on friday. a resident of purd kalan village, the victim's head was smashed by a stone. a case of murder has been registered at sultanpuri police station.
