Erode girl suffocates to death after meat gets stuck in her throat
Erode: A 13-year-old girl suffocated to death after a piece of meat got stuck in her throat at Bhavani in the district on Sunday.
Varshini, a Class 7 student at a government middle school at Sellandi Amman, was at her grandmother's house with her father, V Muniraj, 37, when the incident occurred around 4pm. While they were eating meat, a chunk got stuck in her throat. "Despite drinking water right away, she was unable to swallow it, and soon began to suffocate," Muniraj told reporters.
She was taken to a nearby private hospital, where doctors advised her family to shift her to a government facility. Her parents and relatives then transported her to Bhavani Government Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
As the postmortem of the girl was delayed by more than two hours, her family members and relatives staged a sit-in protest on the Bhavani-Anthiyur state highway.
Bhavani DSP Rathinakumar and police inspector Ravi arrived at the spot and pacified the protesters. Eventually, the autopsy was conducted, and the body was released around 8pm.
The Bhavani police have registered a case.
