Santhome residents get new ground to play, after a delay
Chennai: After much delay, the debris-covered Santhome Beach ground on Loop Road has been converted into a swanky recreational facility with a football ground. Redeveloped with a red sand football turf, a walking track, a gym for senior citizens and better toilet facilities, the playground is set to be inaugurated by deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin in the coming week.
Once a thriving hub for football enthusiasts, the ground had fallen into neglect and was frequently used as an open toilet by people of the area. However, with a govt investment of 1.6 crore, the site has been transformed into a modern recreational space. The project aims to benefit youngsters in the locality, particularly football lovers, by providing them with a well-maintained space.
Redevelopment of the one-acre ground has been made possible with 1.6 crore allocated from the MLA fund. "There is a gallery which can accomodate 500 people. A gym will also be opened in the space soon," said Mylapore MLA Dha Velu.
G Kannan, the contractor who took up the work in Feb 2024, said the delay in completion of work was due to various factors. "We had to clear loads of garbage and cement blocks. Besides, there was a delay due to the rain too."
B Kandhan, a 52-year-old former football player from Foreshore Estate, said there was no compound wall earlier." I remember playing here with my friends. The ground was covered in beach sand. Over the years, people started dumping garbage, and it turned into an open toilet."
Due to the poor condition of the ground, young footballers began practising on the beach or other grounds in the locality. "The new ground will be a great asset, but it must remain open to all," said Patrick C of Foreshore Estate.
While the redevelopment is welcomed, concerns remain regarding hygiene and maintenance. "A guard should be posted. Club matches can be hosted here and regular coaching for kids from nearby fishing hamlets can be arranged," said K V Narayanan, a resident of Santhome.
