COIMBATORE: Ten social activists in Coimbatore were honoured with Mahatma Gandhi Manithaneyam Award on Friday for their contributions for the wellbeing of society.
Coimbatore district collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar presented the awards to social activists M Yoganathan, P Mahendran, Raja Sethu Murali, A Loganathan, V Vairamani, Tasleema Nasreen, Ganesh Somasundaram, L Udiram Gopi, C Jayaprabha and N Valli.
The award was instituted by the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial committee to commemorate the 91st year of Gandhiji’s visit to Coimbatore. Gandhiji visited Coimbatore on Feb 6 and 7, 1934. During his visit, Gandhiji stayed in renowned inventor and scientist G D Naidu’s house at Podanur. In memory of Mahatma Gandhi’s stay, this house was renovated and opened to the public as Mahatma Gandhi Memorial. The award ceremony was held at the memorial.
Congratulating the recipients of the award, the collector said, “It is a matter of pride that we are standing at the feet of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence is timeless. We all must follow Gandhi’s path of peace. Let the Gandhian principle of non-violence guide us on the path of world peace.”
