HOSHIARPUR: Around 17 people, including 10 children, fell ill after consuming food at a langar (community kitchen) organised at a temple in Binewal village, an official stated on Saturday.
Following complaints of severe abdominal cramps and vomiting on Friday evening, they were initially admitted to the community health centre in Binewal, whereupon they were subsequently transferred to the Civil Hospital in Garhshankar, said Dr Santokh, senior medical officer of the hospital.
All the patients are presently stable, and their health condition remains under observation, he said.
A similar incident was reported in Madhya Pradesh last month.
More than 200 residents from three villages became unwell after eating food at a bhandara in Madhya Pradesh's Shivpuri district last month. Around 60 individuals were hospitalised in critical condition at the civil hospital.
The occurrence was documented in Mamoni Kala Gram Panchayat. Health department officials established a camp in the village to examine affected individuals. A local school served as a temporary medical facility.
Village residents report that every household has one or two affected individuals, with potential for increased cases. The incident stemmed from a bhandara organised on Saturday for an idol installation ceremony.
Villagers consumed prasad and remaining food from the bhandara at their homes. The same food was eaten on Sunday as well. At approximately 2 am, people began experiencing symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
Upon receiving reports, health department officials arrived at the village on Monday morning to provide treatment. The department deployed six doctors across Mamoni Kala, Ladippura and Tarpan Ka Purba villages to manage the situation.
