Nabha jail official, woman cop held for helping gangsters

A day after arresting two student leaders of Panjab University (PU) in Chandigarh, the Patiala police on Wednesday detained an assistant superintendent of jail and a woman constable working with the jails department on charges of helping the duo supply drugs to some gangsters while they were lodged in the Nabha maximum security jail.

PATIALA: A day after arresting two student leaders of Panjab University (PU) in Chandigarh, the Patiala police on Wednesday detained an assistant superintendent of jail and a woman constable working with the jails department on charges of helping the duo supply drugs to some gangsters while they were lodged in the Nabha maximum security jail.
Patiala superintendent of police (investigation) H S Virk said arrested PU leader Harman Virk and Arman Cheema, during their preliminary interrogation, had revealed that they used to take help of assistant jail superintendent Roopa Singh and constable Karamjot Sharma alias Jyoti Sharma whenever they visited Kulpreet Singh Neeta Deol and other gangsters in Nabha jail.

They told cops that they would take drugs and money and hand it over either to Roopa or Karamjot, who would then pass it on to Neeta and other gangsters. The SP said the names of Roopa and Karamjot were incorporated in the FIR registered against Harman and Arman by Rajpura Sadar police, and they were placed under arrest.
Virk said the possibility of involvement of other jail staffers could not be ruled out and the cops would proceed as per law in case more names crop during the investigations which were underway.
The police also arrested one Naveen Kumar, a resident of Patran in Patiala district from whom Harman and Arman used to buy narcotics and then supply them to Neeta inside the jail premises. They have also seized about 100g narcotic powder from his possession.
