Chandigarh: The UT police have re-arrested the murder accused who escaped from their custody in Mohali while being taken back to Burail Jail from the local court. On Sunday, the police produced the accused before the local court, which sent him to judicial custody.
According to the police, Sector 31 police received a tip-off that Rintu, the accused, was roaming in Hallomajra area. Acting on this information, Hallomajra police post in-charge Gurvinder Singh, along with his team, conducted a raid and arrested him. Upon searching him, the police also claimed to have recovered a long-handled knife.
Police sources said Rintu had previously also escaped from police custody. On Thursday, he was brought to the Mohali court from Burail Jail for a hearing in a murder case. UT police constable Daljit Singh, who was on general duty at the police line, said Rintu and another accused were brought in the same bus. After the hearing, while waiting for the bus near Lakhnaur crossing, Rintu shook off his hand, pushed the constable, jumped into a drain, and fled the scene.
After an extensive search, when the accused could not be found, the constable informed the PCR. Subsequently, special teams were formed to arrest the accused. The police have registered an additional case against the accused for escaping and possessing a weapon under sections of the BNS and Arms Act.
