4 students injured in attack during PUCSC event
Chandigarh: Four students were injured in an alleged attack with a sharp object during the Masoom Sharma's event organised by the Panjab University Campus Students' Council (PUCSC) joint secretary Jasvinder Rana at the university's South Campus. PU chief of security Vikram Singh confirmed the incident, saying one of the injured was a student from the computer science department of the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET).
The authorities also reported that one of the victims was an outsider, a student from a private university in the region. Injured were admitted to a hospital nearby.
Videos of the injured students have surfaced on social media, though details about the attackers and the motive remain unclear. The incident occurred despite the presence of security personnel at the venue. University officials have not yet issued a formal statement on the matter, and further investigations are underway.
The event, which featured a performance by Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma, had a turnout lower than 7,000 permitted by the UT administration.
The first event, featuring Gurdas Maan, was scheduled but was called off after the organisers did not receive a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the UT administration. The cancellation reportedly resulted in financial losses of around Rs 20 lakh, as stage and sound system arrangements were already made. The second event, featuring Arjan Dhillon, was cancelled after an unexpectedly large crowd of about 15,000 gathered at the venue, exceeding the permitted capacity and leading to security concerns.
In contrast, today's event was conducted under increased security arrangements and at a different venue, in Sector 25 campus, with a smaller crowd.
