NEW DELHI: Six devotees from Karnataka died after jeep they were traveling in collided with a bus in
Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh on Monday.
The incident took place near Pahrewa village in Sihora tehsil, on NH-7. The collision occurred early in the morning, around 4.30am.
The victims, all devotees from Karnataka, were returning after visiting Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj.
The deceased have been identified as Virupaxi Gumati, son of Chinappa, from Gokak, Belgaum, Karnataka, Baasvaaraj Kurati, son of Nirupadapp, from Gokak, Baalchandra, son of Narayan, from Gokak, Raju, son of Chinappa, from Gokak, Suneel and Veerana.
Two people sustained serious injuries in the crash and were referred to the Medical College in Jabalpur for specialized treatment.
The passengers were part of a group of devotees from Karnataka who had been on a religious trip to Prayagraj. They were traveling back when the accident occurred.
The vehicle was reportedly carrying a group of passengers, and the bus, which was also carrying devotees, collided head-on with the vehicle under unclear circumstances.
According to Jabalpur collector Deepak Saxena, the Karnataka-registered jeep was returning from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, when the driver lost control.
The district collector rushed to the accident site to assess the situation.
The Sihora-Khitola police arrived at the scene promptly after receiving reports of the accident. Authorities have begun an investigation into the cause of the collision.
On February 11, a traveller vehicle collided with a truck on NH-7, resulting in the deaths of eight devotees from Andhra Pradesh.
In all 26 devotees have lost their lives in the last 10 days in 9 separate incidents.

The victims were returning to Maharashtra from Prayagraj after attending the Mahakumbh when the crash occurred around 4am near Deotalab under Laur police station limits.
The deceased were identified as Rakesh Pardeshi (40), Sarita Pardeshi (53), and Anjana Chourasia (52), all residents of Maharashtra.
Two other passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital.
The Laur police station head constable, Surendra Singh, said, "Rakesh Pardeshi and Sarita Pardeshi died on the spot, while Anjana Chourasia was referred to Mauganj civil hospital, and doctors referred her to Rewa's Sanjay Gandhi hospital, where she died."
Sources indicated that the car driver lost control, causing the vehicle to cross the divider and enter the opposite lane, where it crashed into an oncoming truck.
